Language diversity is one of humanity's most important cultural features. Australian students need the chance to learn about other languages and the culture that goes with them. Languages at University level need to be taught by academics who have considerable intellectual research achievements both to inspire their students and to advance Australia's intellectual environment.

I’m signing because the loss of Anthropology at UWA would be a loss for our nation, still dealing with bring native title through the courts, no less than for Western Australia whose Aboriginal history, State heritage and intellectual life has been well served by this Department. It would be a loss for me as a person who cares about a future but does not live in WA. This is no time for cultural impoverishment. It is time to invest in the future and Anthropology flourishing in WA offers us light.

I care about the significant deficit to this nation's intellectual assets these cuts would cause.

I totally support retaining these significant social sciences courses as necessary aspects of both imaginative and responsible education.

Two of the best units I have ever taken at UWA were part of the Korean Studies major. I would hate to see these cuts affecting the incredible teaching staff in the Social Sciences/Asian Studies department, who are so passionate and dedicated to their work and their students.

As a society we can only move forward by having an understanding of the many different cultures of our world and the history of those who have gone before us. The proposed changes as listed seem short-sighted.
