PETITION TO KEEP THE HISTORICAL TWEED SOUTH SEA ISLANDER DRY-STONE WALLS ON THE TWEED VALLEY HOSPITAL SITE AT CUDGEN INTACT!

We are members of  the Tweed  South Sea Islander (SSI) Community and WE NEED YOUR HELP NOW to save the integrity of all SSI dry stone walls on the new Tweed Valley hospital development site at Cudgen!

The Dry-Stone Walls have a significant cultural attachment to the descendants of a people, who in the late 1800s were taken (blackbirded) against their own will from many South Pacific Islands for virtual slave labour, subsequently to be classified at the time as “Indentured labourer’s”.

This history and particular knowledge is well known by our South Sea Islander descendants locally and afar. The oral history supplements the cultural significance of  the Dry-Stone Walls and their location draws a spiritual connection to our people.

It is essential that the integrity of ALL of the 5 stone walls be retained and incorporated into the hospital development in recognition of the significant contribution by our SSI forefathers to the growth of this great State and country.

We believe the total lack of consultation with the Tweed South Sea Islander community BEFORE the Concept Plan was developed and approved was unconscionable conduct and any mitigation was an afterthought.

Please follow us on facebook: “Australian South Sea Islander – Save our History on the Tweed” for more information on the history or significance and sign this petition. In solidarity!
