Naja Voorhoeve started this petition to The Hon. Martin Dixon MLA (Victorian Minister for Education.)

An evangelical church in our neighbourhood, acting alongside ACCESS Ministries volunteers, handed out 'weaponised' versions of the bible at my son's school. These books were overtly proselytizing and contained homophobic material. And sex tips too.

We can never know how many times this has happened before - but we now know that the accreditation of 'religious education' programmes ushers in a maelstrom of unchecked behaviour. Clearly the only people we can trust to act responsibly in our schools are our teachers. I call for the removal of special religious instruction volunteers from government schools. Let's give our schools back to the teachers.

But apart from the opportunities that present themselves when you invite evangelical ministries into schools, there are deeper seated problems with SRI. For example the curriculum used by the main provider in Victoria, ACCESS Ministries, focuses on developing the child's relationship with god - what does god mean to me? Children are not asked to think about what is good or bad about religion. They just write prayers to Jesus and thank him for dying.

This is not an education in religion. The curriculum peddled by ACCESS Ministries does not equip children with any background in enquiry such as would lead them to 'get on better' with people of different faith perspectives. Nor does anything about the programme promote life-long learning.

You can make a difference by signing this petition. You can also start a conversation with your friends - in your school or at work. You've got this far - now do something!
