At the upcoming Council of Australian Governments meeting scheduled for December, the Prime Minister intends to hand responsibility for the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act over to the States and Territories. State and Territory Governments will have the power to approve development projects that have nationally significant environmental impacts. This comes at a time when State politicians are jumping over each other to weaken environmental protection. The only thing that limits their rapaciousness is that developments that threaten nationally significant species and communities currently have to be referred to Canberra for further investigation and approval. Don't let our Prime Minister remove this safeguard.
