Mental Health is a big state wide issue for me with several close friends and relatives suffering from depression and other psychiatric disorders. This is certainly a major issue with adolescents as children under the age of 12 and adults over the age of 18 have frequent access to public mental instituitons and assistance. But for the age bracket of between 12 and 18, there is minimal public support if these people are suffering from a mental illness. The Redbank School at Westmead Hospital is the only public facility that can treat this age group, help them complete school work, provide one on one assistance and counselling and attempt to get them back to normal school. However, Redbank only takes around 20 students at a time and only has the patient for up to 6 weeks. This short time limit is due to the long waiting list to get into the facility.

I am calling on the NSW Government to open up a school like Redbank, to treat adolescents with psychiatric problems and help them to ease back into school, at every NSW public hospital in Sydney and in large regional centres. This would help tackle the problem of mental illnesses for adolescents and also allowing a longer time span at these facilities to get them back on their feet. It would also ease the burden on the families who suffer immensly with the lack of support. Mental health will always be a major issue for adolescents, therefore we need to provide them with every opportunity to get themselves on the right track. This petition has been set up as part of my YMCA NSW Youth Parliament program!
