The new anti cancer drug "Keytruda" should urgently be put on the PBS. There has been outstanding success in trials for many forms of cancer including Ovarian cancer and many lives could be saved. "Keytruda" is not a chemotherapy drug, it is an immunotherapy drug which strengthens the bodies immune system to firstly recognize the cancer and then attack it as it does with other foreign bodies. There are no debilitating side affects as there are with chemo therapy and patients can contiue a normal life whilst on treatment. Many would benefit from this drug, but at the moment the cost is around $4500 per cycle and a cycle is needed every three weeks. This is out of reach for most people, particularly pensioners. This drug should be available to everybody, not just people who can afford to pay for it. If the Federal Health Minister were to put the drug on the PBS, so many cancer sufferers could have their lives changed and many return to happy, healthy and productive lives. My wife was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer 10 years ago and has had numerous bouts of chemotherapy which will contain the cancer but won't cure it. It would be wonderful if she and many others, didn't have to go through all the dreadful side affects of the chemo therapy and return to normal lives..
