Women in Papua New Guinea are being tortured and murdered after being accused of sorcery. Barbaric practices such as burning their genitals with hot irons, beating and slashing them with machetes, and burning them alive, are being carried out with local authorities unable or unwilling to act. Sorcery is legally recognised in Papua New Guinea under the Sorcery Act (1971) and remains ingrained in cultural beliefs.
We call on the Foreign Minister to demand the government of Papua New Guinea to repeal the Sorcery Act (1971) and provide training and resources to local police forces to arrest and charge people who torture and murder women accused of "witchcraft".
