Claudia Howell started this petition to The Hillcrest High School Board

For far too long, period poverty has been a prominent issue in New Zealand. Many families struggle to afford feminine hygiene products for their daughters. Periods are among the most natural things a woman can experience. This being said, they are not a choice. A woman approximately spends 7 years of her life menstruating and more needs to be done to make those 7 years easier. For starters, schools providing period products in bathrooms would help immensely. It would take the stress out of potentially forgetting to bring products or not having any. As a student, I would not be able to afford to buy my own products, however I am of privilege and am able to rely on my parents for that. Having dispensers in bathrooms would cater for students who come from lower socio-economic households. It would also remove a lot of shame or embarrassment involved in asking the school nurse for products. Periods are a normal occurrence and supplying them in bathrooms would treat them like it. Menstrual products are as necessary as toilet paper, and they should be treated accordingly.

Many lower decile schools would be unable to afford regular supplies of products without aid from the government and local health boards. New Zealand needs to prioritise menstrual equity policy; establishing adequate legislation will do so. Pads and tampons need to be viewed as health necessities.

This petition is aiming to create awareness around the issue and allow your voices to be heard.
