Why this petition matters

Started by Laura Sievers

Deaf people or people who are hard of hearing have to encounter a lot of disadvantages in their lives. Especially regarding higher education they have to face severe hurdles. Lectures or seminars are simply not made for deaf people, even if transplants allow them to hear some parts. In order to fully understand the lectures the affected have to study in advance for every lecture, will still only understand parts of it when attending the lecture and have then to figure out what they missed - while preparing for the lectures of the next day.

The possibility to record the lecture or even use a dictating machine creating a transcript of the lecture would be an immense help to the deaf students. However, the Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS) has a strict non-recording policy - even for deaf students.

This petition is created to change the policy, enable deaf students at THUAS to record their lectures, and achieve more equality in education.
