In Australia feminine hygiene products are taxed under the GST and condoms are not. What the government does not understand is that pads and tampons are a NECESSITY and women CANNOT go without them. Tampons and pads can be priced up to $5 for a packet of 12. That is over $2 per pad which can be up to and over $8 a day. an average woman's period can last anywhere form 3-7 days or even longer, this means a woman could be spending over $63 a month just on her menstrual cycle alone.
The GST is contributing to this majorly and this needs to be stopped. Condoms are not taxed under the GST and if they are not neither should feminine hygiene products. Condoms do not be bought in the bulk ways pads and tampons are, They are not needed on such a regular basis and are not a monthly necessity.
The GST needs to be removed from feminine hygiene products to make them cheaper and more accessible for Australian women.
