The Greek government: Improve the situation for refugees in Greece who are living in destitution

The situation in Greece is well-documented. Thousands of people arrive in Greece each year, many of them refugees, hoping to seek protection from persecution in countries such as Afghanistan. The Greek state is not able to provide that protection, in part due to the economic crisis. Every week over 100 people queue up hoping to be one of the lucky 20 allowed applying for asylum that week and getting a pink paper that gives them some minimal assistance, but many will be disappointed. Refugees and migrants are living on the streets, trapped in Greece, with little or no assistance, and with a rising tide of racism that means many have been beaten and attacked. Public opinion sees them as an additional burden at a difficult time. The refugees and migrants themselves focus on survival. There is an active coalition of refugee community groups, the Greek Forum of Refugees, that includes the Afghan Association of Greece, that does what it can with very limited resources, but on the whole the refugees and migrants suffer because of Greek and EU asylum policy, but have little real say in what is happening.
