Petitioning The Greater Manchester Pension Fund

Please let CAM stay where is is!

For the past 2 years, the CAM team have been working towards the goal of having our own permanent shop in Chorlton precinct. Our goal was to not only facilitate the opportunity for local people to sell their work, but to also help to improve the precinct and to change some people's negative opinions of the area.

Last year we finally managed to secure a large empty (and very dirty) unit and in November 2014 we opened the doors to the CAM Hub & Autumn's Vintage Boutique. We have had a wonderful reception from local people and surrounding businesses and now have over 60 local people making money from the shop. We are more than keen to keep it going long term.

Unfortunatly we have received news that a charity shop business wishes to take the unit we currently occupy. Because charity shops are big corporations these days, they can afford to outbid small businesses on the rental fees. Plus, they only have to pay 20% of the business rates. There is also another big charity shop about to take the empty unit next door to us, meaning that there could possibly be 2 huge ones next door to each other.

We have our lease until the end of April, but after that we do not know what is going to happen to our shop. We have worked so hard, day after day and night after night to get this shop going and to make it a success. We believe very passionatly that our shop is much better for Chorlton than another charity shop would be. We contribute more to the local economy than charity shops do, and we would be paying the full business rates.

Charity shops and low end businesses are not good for communities in so many ways. From the feedback we have recieved so far, it seems to us that we are what people genuinely want. Our goal is to inspire people and to offer local people the opportunity to start up or to expand their businesses. This is only a small part of what the CAM Hub does for Chorlton and we are only going to get better as we build ourselves up.

We have never believed in anything as strongly as we believe in this shop, but we now need as much vocal support as we can get. We need to convince the landlord (The Greater Manchester Pension Fund) and the estate managers (GVA) that our shop is the best option for that unit. Sometimes in life, people in suits need to see the bigger picture beyond short term profit. Please help us to prove to them that the people of Chorlton would like for the CAM Hub & Autumn's Vintage Boutique to stay where it is.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this. Please get in touch if there is anything you can do to help us.
