Save the Musi river

Save the Musi river
As residents of Hyderabad, it should be our duty to bring this issue to the attention of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal corporation. Most of the water in the Musi river is sewage waste and there is a sufficient buildup of stagnant water near the Tipu Khan bridge. Due to urbanisation and the dumping of garbage in the mainstream of the Musi river, the water is affecting local farms and animals. During the monsoon season, Hyderabad gets heavily affected. The amount of rain that Hyderabad receives causes water bodies, especially the Musi river to overflow and flood nearby areas. This affects local farmers greatly as according to a study done by Osmania University’s Centre Of Exploration Geophysics, the water is highly contaminated and is unfit for irrigation. When the contaminated water comes in contact with crops, it causes a number of issues with soil because the contaminated water washes out the essential nutrients from the soil and turns it acidic, which overall affects the consumers as well.
Water from the Musi river also impacts animals. When animals drink the poisoned water, they can die due to a number of reasons. Then there are animals like fish and amphibians. The water is practically inhabitable for them. Algae gets affected by the pollution in the water that breeds water organisms and causes them to absorb and reduce most of the oxygen in the water, causing aquatic animals to die. It is especially dangerous for endangered animals that come in contact with the water because it lowers the number of those animals on a global scale.
The conditions of this river is 100% unacceptable. As a person who is a part of the upcoming generation and who cares about the future generations of this planet, I urge you to sign this petition and raise awareness about this to the government of Telangana and GHMC to do something about this burning issue.
