Improve State support for individuals with Developmental Disabilities
This petition had 182 supporters
We, as citizens of the State of Washington, are concerned about the failure of this state to meet the needs of individuals with Developmental Disabilities and their families. The current system was designed to help support and strengthen families so they could provide care for their loved ones at home. Currently, 36% of people eligible for support, over 14,000 individuals, do not receive any services or support from the State of Washington. Approximately 4,800 of these individuals require 24 hours of care and supervision each day. Many families will wait for a decade or more before they become eligible for services. The system is broken and the state is failing these families.
This situation has left families struggling to care for their loved ones. The system is crisis driven. Families waiting for services will not receive them unless they reach a crisis which forces them to seek out of home placement for their family member. This does not benefit the individual with a developmental disability, the family or the taxpayer. Out of home placement is much more expensive than providing the support families need to care for their loved one at home. It is vital that we provide support to families before they reach a crisis stage.
We ask that you protect current programs and move to expand funding for the Division of Developmental Disabilities so that these vulnerable individuals and their families can finally receive the support they need. Thank you.
