Do not deny our Aussie Afghanistan veterans the Meritorious Unit Citation!

Many Australians deployed to Afghanistan and did not commit any crimes.

While some SAS soldiers committed horrific acts (including 39 murders) that have caused immense strategic damage to the ADF and to Australia, other soldiers in the Special Operations Task Group actually did their job, and so the entire unit was recognised for meritorious service. It doesn't matter if a unit has now been disgraced; all that matters is that some people in the unit did their job. Because the unit itself doesn't matter, only the people inside it matter.

Other units that didn't murder anyone at all should be recognised as having served at least as meritoriously as the Special Operations Task Group.

Also, the Special Operations Task Group soldiers should keep their Meritorious Unit Citations too. Except for the SAS soldiers who committed crimes, if one day they are even found guilty by a civilian court (because the ADF justice and personnel management systems might be biased, so it has to be conviction by a civilian court). If any of those SAS soldiers are ever convicted by a court - years in the future - maybe those soldiers should have to one day give all of their medals back. But only after they are legally convicted - if that ever that might happen, which seems a very long way off. It doesn't matter that they did what the IG ADF knows they did, it only matters if they are convicted by a civilian court.

Failing to award the Meritorious Unit Citation to any Aussie Afghanistan veteran implies that that the service of that veteran was not meritorious. For veterans who did not commit any crimes, the very fact that they deployed and did their job shows that they were meritorious.

THE SINS OF THE FEW MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO DIMINISH THE MERITORIOUS SERVICE OF THE MANY!

All ADF members who have served in Afghanistan, who have not been convicted of murder or other serious crimes occurring during their deployment, should be awarded the Meritorious Unit Citation.
