Tom Parkinson started this petition to The Government of the United Kingdom

In the wake of recent events it is clear that members of Parliament are given far too much opportunity to make obscene profits from their role governing the citizens of the UK. The goal of becoming an MP is supposed to be representing your fellow citizens and working towards their best interests. A drastic change is required to the way in which MP's are paid for their work. The average salary of an MP in the UK is £81,932, as of April 2020. This is far, far in excess of the amount of money that the vast majority of people in this country could even dream of earning in their lifetime.

It is clear that the salary of members of parliament must be reduced to bring their pay - and their experience of life in this country - in line with that of the lowest common denominator. To this end, we demand that all MP's - including the Prime Minister - salaries be reduced to £9.50 per hour. Additionally, controls should be put in place that stringently deny MP's to any form of additional income, including ownership of rental properties. Should an MP wish to apply for any benefits, they must apply using the same process that any other UK citizen would be expected to follow.

If members of parliament find themselves unable to support themselves and their families then perhaps they might consider making changes to how the minimum wage and benefits systems are applied in the UK. And if they realise that they are suddenly much less attracted to the idea of working as a member of parliament, perhaps they would consider stepping down from their roles and making way for others who might be more willing to work towards improving the lives of the people in their communities.
