PSAC North started this petition to The Government of the Northwest Territories

At Public Service Alliance of Canada North, we began working on a campaign at the beginning of the year calling for all northern territories to increase minimum wage to $15/hr per hour.

However, according to several recent findings and reports, the current and proposed minimum wage does not cover the cost of living in the north. With new information, we have decided to increase that figure to a Living Wage.

A minimum wage that’s a Living Wage is a fairer alternative to individuals and families in the north where the costs of living is the highest in the country.

If you're a current resident of the NWT, we invite you to sign this petition. For more information click here

PETITION:

To the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly:

This petition of the undersigned shows:
THAT the minimum wage in the Northwest Territories is $13.46 per hour,
THAT the Living Wage in the NWT has been calculated by Alternatives North as $20.96 per hour, and
THAT the cost of living in the NWT is among the highest in Canada.

THEREFORE, we, the petitioners, ask the Government of the Northwest Territories to bring forth a plan to: (1) increase the NWT’s minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2020 (2) change the NWT’s minimum wage to a Living Wage, identified by Alternatives North as $20.96 per hour, by 2021 and (3) tie annual minimum/living wage increases to the Consumer Price Index.
