More than 40,000 Jhodias, described by the district gazetteer of Kashipur, 1966, as ‘principal tribe’ of Odisha’s Kashipur, find themselves de-listed as Scheduled Tribe because the centre and state governments colluded with mining companies to deny them their rights.
There was no problem until 1980s. They were getting their ST certificates and claimed official benefits. But discovery of Bauxite changed their fate. Suddenly they found themselves out of the ST list.
Their fight so far has yielded nothing, such is the influence of mining lobbies seeking Bauxite in their mountains.
