A large trunk of papers have been found as part of a private collection in the United Kingdom. They will soon be going up at auction. These papers are an important part of Canadian history. They contain information, maps and other items from the early 1800s onwards. This is valuable to the citizens of the nation of Canada and should be held in our Archives so future generations are able to view, study and make proper use of them. The alternative is them disappearing for another 200 years into a private collection. Such items, so important to the history of our nation, should be held in trust by our government on our behalf.
Recently, the Government of Canada has cut the budget to the Archives, meaning a purchase they would have once been readily made is nearly impossible. The government claims to see the importance of Canadian history and Canadian understanding of their history. For this reason, they should ensure that our archives can purchase these unique and important artifacts.
