The UK’s rail network consistently fails to live up to the standards of its European counterparts. From delays to cancellations to levels of service, the UK rail system is nothing far from a joke. The privatisation of such a network has led to consistently rising prices accompanied by a decline in standards. When a trip cross country can be achieved for a lower price in plane travel than by rail, surely that defeats the purpose of public transport and its availability to all.

A re-nationalisation of the British rail system needs to be established. If all are funded, run and maintained by one body, a greater level of service is inevitable and more achievable.

Rail passenger figures have more than doubled in the past 20 years and yet service standards have failed to reflect this. Additionally, fares have risen by almost 50% since 2007, with currently prices being one of the highest in the western world.

Environmental concerns also play a factor. A more appealing rail system, one that is efficient and reliable could lead to a reduction in motor traffic, able to hold many more passengers than most other forms of transport at a considerably reduced environmental impact.

Nationalisation would provide a pot from which investment back into the system could be utilised to drive down prices and allow public transportation to relieve pressure on Britain’s roads.
