Make Construction workers “key workers” during Covid 19 pandemic
Having worked in the Construction industry for many years and namely during 2020 and the Covid 19 Pandemic I feel it’s correct we are actually recognised for being the “key workers” we are. We have worked through most of the pandemic and it’s lockdowns with very basic PPE in public facing roles. The HBF and the Government have asked us to continue to work yet we are not listed as “critical workers” or “key workers”. So while we have to continue to work in a business and usual fashion our children cannot be educated along with other key worker children. We work in roles which cannot be achieved from the safety of our homes and when we are placed into lockdown after lockdown we are stuck with no way of finding childcare for our children. The impact this has on those in the construction industry is not fair. We have played a vital role in the continuation of the country’s economy and are still not recognised for carrying on and putting ourselves in a position of (at times) vulnerability in order to keep people moving home and buying houses. We cannot get support and are forced to choose between working and not being paid because we have no options for childcare available to us. It’s only right if the Government want the construction industry to continue as normal then they must allow our children to be classed as those of key workers too.
