We demand the legal recognition of sexual minorities in Hong Kong

It is estimated that three out of four Hong Kongers support greater equality for homosexual couples. However, almost 80% of the working population in Hong Kong think that sexual minorities, such as gays and lesbians, face discrimination or negative treatment. As a result of the limited awareness in the Hong Kong government pertaining to these issues, practically no measures have been put into place in order to protect the rights of this community, a severe injustice that is simply unacceptable.
But let’s bring this a little closer to home. At school, it’s impossible to walk into a hallway during lunchtime without an outburst of the word “gay” as an insult. Non-heteronormative education about sexual orientations remains limited, discussion of different sexual identities is either met with scorn or derision, and this seems unlikely to change.
That is, until now! The Alliance has decided to spearhead a revolution of tolerance and love for all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation, which is ultimately aimed at celebrating diversity and securing equal legal rights for sexual minorities in Hong Kong.
As an institution that advocates for the development of global citizenship, it is critical that the students of the Canadian International School of Hong Kong participate in local and international efforts to protect the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. The fight for equality is one fraught with social stigma, but the power of youth and action is unquestionable.
Help us combat homophobic attitudes across the school, city and globe, and support us in our campaign to create an environment where all can thrive.
