Freeze business rates for 2014/15!

The FSB is calling for a freeze in business rates for 2014/15. Many small firms simply don’t qualify for the Government’s small business rate relief, resulting in small businesses being hit hard by hikes in business rates making it difficult for many to survive.

Micro firms are the engine of growth. 99% of firms employ less than 49 people. Around 60% of the workforce is in the SME sector and 50% of GDP comes from the SME sector. Why is it that at a time when small firms are struggling, when they are being encouraged to take on staff, and when they are so clearly the drivers of much needed growth in the economy that business rates have not been frozen?!

Freeze Business Rates 2014/15

The FSB calls on the Government to protect small businesses and freeze business rates in 2014/15. Many small firms simply don’t qualify for the Government’s small business rate relief, resulting in small businesses being hit hard by hikes in business rates making it difficult for many to survive.

A simple and long overdue freeze to business rates would provide much needed respite for struggling small firms. Around 1 in 10 respondents to a Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) survey say they are paying more in rates than rent.

Business rates generate a huge sum for the Treasury but it is squeezing those least able to afford it – all this at a time when micro firms are being asked to take on more staff which would like to do.

Freezing business rates for 2014/15 would provide much needed relief to struggling small firms. Please support our vital small business community and help us make this change today – it will save businesses, save jobs and provide a much needed boost to the economy.

Sincerely,
Federation of Small Businesses
