Catherine Keeble started this petition to The Government

The government acknowledges pregnant women as vulnerable and at the beginning of lockdown allowed them to shield, now with the government's insistence on life getting back to normal - especially where schools are concerned -  the government has withdrawn the right for women working in education settings to shield.

The Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists states that despite constant national policy shifts regarding pregnant women “our clinical advice around pregnant women and the risk and potential implications of being severely affected by Covid-19, particularly affecting those who are at 28 weeks gestations or above, still stands.”

The Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists also states:

-        “It is known from other respiratory infections (e.g. influenza, SARS)…that pregnant woman who contract significant respiratory infections in the third trimester (after 28 weeks) are more likely to become seriously unwell. This may also lead to preterm birth of their baby, intended to enable the woman to recover through improving the efficiency of her breathing or ventilation…”

-        “With regard to vertical transmission (transmission from woman to baby antenatally or intrapartum), emerging evidence now suggests that vertical transmission is probable”.

Currently it is left to individual businesses to carry out a risk assessment and decide as to whether they believe that it is safe for the pregnant employee. Sadly there are many businesses that will simply say 'we think it is safe enough and the government says you can work, so you can work', despite settings not being safe and the mother's anxiety levels  being sky-high. The MGH CENTER for Women’s Mental Health (Reproductive Psychiatry Resource & Information Center) states that: “In Humans, high levels of anxiety during pregnancy have been associated with an increased risk of developing preeclampsia, premature birth and low birth weight.”

Whilst there is no current evidence to prove that COVID-19 has a direct impact on a baby’s development or causes miscarriage, its effects on the mother can and have led to many mothers contracting covid-19 to have to have a premature birth in-order to be able to recover properly; which itself can have negative impacts on a baby’s development and survival chance.

Please support pregnant mothers having to work in public settings - especially in education settings - during this pandemic by signing this petition in order to fight for the right to shield during their pregnancy.
