Abortion needs to become a right for all women across America.

A major controversy in politics right now is if abortion should be legal or not. Even President Trump is threatening to cut all government funding to the largest abortion provider in America, Planned Parenthood. Some people consider abortion to be the same as murder. The definition of abortion is, “the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy.” There is no mention of murder in that definition. Many of these “pro-life” supporters know very well that people would still find ways to terminate pregnancies, even if they were illegal. Thousands of mothers die every year from having an unprofessional abortion or complications with the pregnancy, and this number will skyrocket if abortion is outlawed. If these women die, then being “pro-life” is a bit contradictory.

Children take up a lot of time, and a lot of people just do not have that to spare. Most people try to focus on completing school before assuming the responsibility of another human being. Others have very busy work schedules that have no room in them for a child. Some people have a child already, and can not take care of another. The Guttmacher Institute says, “Some reasons for abortion were, ‘...the belief that having a baby would interfere with work, school, or the ability to care for other dependents.’”

Some people believe that having an abortion is the same thing as murder. Abortion is not murder. “‘Embryos and fetuses are not independent, self-determining beings, and abortion is the termination of a pregnancy, not a baby…’ The majority opinion in Roe v. Wade states that the word ‘person’ as used in the Fourteenth Amendment [of the U.S. Constitution], does not include the unborn.,” according to the writers at procon.org. Even the Constitution says that fetuses and embryos are not people. You terminate the pregnancy before it develops into a person. Think about it. You measure your life from the day you were born, not the day that you were conceived on.

Having an abortion can prevent parents from having to go through the pain of carrying a pregnancy to full term, and then having it die shortly after. It prevents parents from having to see their child suffer while slowly dying. Joy Freeman did an article with The Guardian about how she had to make this tough choice. She had to choose if she wanted to carry her pregnancy to full term and watch it suffer, or abort it. She said, “Our baby was diagnosed with spina bifida at a routine scan about halfway through the pregnancy. The prognosis was not good: major, life saving surgery at birth, no walking, probably no talking. The likelihood that he would survive childhood was murky.” If she had not aborted this child, she would have had to watch him suffer his way through his shortened life, and most likely watch him die a slow, painful death. That is an emotional burden that parents should not have to suffer through.

Fetuses and Embryos can not feel any pain during the abortion. Some Pro-Lifers (someone who thinks all abortion is wrong) believe that the fetus can feel pain while being aborted. The science proves this group of individuals to be incorrect. Mary Wisiniewski from reuters.com states, “The position of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is that there is ‘no legitimate scientific information that supports the statement that a fetus experiences pain.’” The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is made up of people who study these kinds of things all day, and they found no evidence of a fetus enduring any pain in the course of an abortion. "’The science shows that based on gestational age, the fetus is not capable of feeling pain until the third trimester,’ said Kate Connors, a spokesperson for ACOG. The third trimester begins at about 27 weeks of pregnancy,’” according to Sara G. Miller. At this point in the pregnancy, the parents would have made a decision whether to keep the child anyway.

“Women who are denied abortions are more likely to become unemployed, be on public welfare, to be below the poverty line...,”according to the writers of procon.org. Some parents just can’t afford to have a baby. “...the average middle-income family will spend roughly $12,000 on child-related expenses in their baby’s first year of life. By age two, parents are up to more than $12,500 per year,” says Diane Harris from parenting.com. That is just about half of an average American salary. Between bills and other everyday expenses, these people can not afford the cost of a child. Because parents cannot afford providing for children, the child’s quality of life goes down. The Guttmacher Institute did a study, and these were the results: “Some 75% of abortion patients in 2014 were poor or low- income.Twenty-six percent of patients had incomes of less than 100-199% of the federal poverty level, and 49% had incomes of less than 100% of the federal poverty level ($15,730 for a family of two).” Bringing a child into the world that is a burden is not what any parent really wants. They want to be able to properly care for the child before they make the huge commitment of parenthood. Abortion is the only way to let that happen.

No child should come into the world unwanted. Some people are not responsible, and get pregnant when they don’t want children. Those kinds of things happen. When a child grows up being unwanted by parents, they are far more likely to face mental health and self-esteem issues as adults. They are also more likely to become criminals as a way to gain attention. Children need parents who love them, not parents who wish they were never born. When a parent does not love their child, the child may not learn basic life skills like good manners and how to share with others. They would have to rely on different people to teach them these things, or grow up without these fundamental skill of functioning in society.

Around 14,000 women get abortions following incest or rape, and it is estimated that 43% of women worldwide will have an abortion by the time they are in their mid forties. It is also estimated that there are 43 million abortions a year. That is around the population of the Ukraine. Imagine a world in which  those abortions had not happened. With the current population issue in the world, there are over seven billion people on the planet, and we have limited resources which are disappearing quickly. So in a strange way abortion is beneficial to the planet. Pro-life supporters do not see the situations, reasons, and benefits that abortions have on the world. They are ignoring the reason why many women choose to make the decision they do. It is clear that abortion should remain legal. Even if it seems like the wrong thing to do, it can often be the best situation for the people that have to make that tough decision. Pro-choice defends and protects the people. We live in a country based on freedom, so everybody should have the free right to choose what will happen to their bodies.
