Why this petition matters

Started by Louise Wakefield

The NHS is short of nurses & needs to recruit thousands of new nurses to keep the service running yet experienced staff are limited to be able to work a small number of hours if they take their NHS pension before age 60. This has a massive impact on the availability of trained staff to work in the NHS & often results in them looking for work in the private sector. This ‘abatement’ rule was suspended during the pandemic so semi-retired nurses could work more hours to help run the NHS due to the increased pressures but this will be re-instated March 2022. We are asking for this restrictive rule affecting thousands of experienced NHS staff to be reviewed in light of the significant staff shortages in the NHS.
