Make the Globe & Mail Accessible Now

In May 2015, the Globe & Mail introduced a new iPhone app that removed users’ ability to increase font size. As a result, a once-accessible app has become difficult or impossible for members of the visually impaired community to use. Its removal shows a serious inattention to accessibility concerns.

I and others have raised this issue with the Globe & Mail and have repeatedly been told that a fix would be forthcoming. Over a year later, none has been provided. The FAQ on the app currently states that “our development team is aware of reader requests to add the option. We will update [you] if it becomes available at a later time so stay tuned”. This feature was available on previous versions of the Globe & Mail app, and remains available on the Android version. It is a standard feature of newspaper apps.

Please add your voice to ours to ask that the Globe immediately fix this problem so that everyone can enjoy the newspaper’s excellent content. Accessibility in design should be a priority for app designers, not an afterthought.  This petition will be removed once the feature has been added to the Globe's iPhone app.
