Most wildfires are caused by people, sometimes accidentally or on purpose. They can begin by accident like when campfires are left unwatched or not put out properly, a cigarette is thrown, or someone using fire to dispose of trash can’t gain control of the fire. In 2015, in the US, close to 59,000 fires caused by people damaged 2,000,000+ acres. Nature, like lightning, only makes approximately 10% of fires. Lava from volcanoes can also start fires. Other methods such as droughts and insect infestations, can make the likelihood and spread of wildfires higher.

The practice of agriculture has been featured a lot in the newest controversy around some of the fires in the Amazon rainforest, so people at the University of Maryland who are with NASA Harvest decided to look at their importance and effects. Two huge threats to Amazon rainforests are deforestation, the clearing of forests for agricultural purposes, and fire, which can degrade the ecological functioning of whole rainforests permanently.

Remote sensing instruments have two primary types—active sensors and passive sensors. Active sensors give themselves their source of energy to brighten the items they inspect. An active sensor emits radiation where the target to be investigated is. Then the sensor sees and measures the radiation that is bounced back or backscattered away from the object. Passive sensors detect natural radiation that’s been emitted or bounced back from the item or scene being investigated. Sunlight that is reflected is the average source of energy measured by passive sensors.
