On Tuesday, February 25, 2020, Senate Bill 86 was filed by Senator Baxley of Ocala. If passed, this bill would prohibit students from receiving state financial aid unless their degree program leads directly to employment. Additionally, language in the bill no longer requires that the highest tier of Bright Futures compensate for the full cost of tuition.

The Florida Student Association is a board composed of the 12 student body presidents of the public universities in Florida. Each year, they lobby for student interests in Tallahassee. The chair sits on the Board of Governors to represent the over 400,000 university students in Florida. This bill will have a devastating impact on our Florida students, and FSA is deeply concerned.

Bright Futures is one of the most important institutions in Florida higher education. Since 2018, the program has allowed over 100,000 students each year to offset the cost of education in their pursuit of personal development, social mobility, and employment. High achieving high school students are kept in Florida by Bright Futures-- why go out of state when you can receive an affordable world-class education in your backyard?

Incentivizing students to enter specific areas of study, which will likely primarily include a STEM and business focus, will artificially inflate those areas. Students will be pushed into majors for which they have no passion or aptitude, solely because the state legislature does not think their education is worth funding.

The signatories to this petition unequivocally condemn Senate Bill 86. We ask for your support in fighting for the students of our great state.
