Why this petition matters

The history of women in film is one rife with struggles, triumphs, justice and injustice alike. One of the many, many issues I myself have observed is one found in the cinematically iconic genre of YA films, particularly those involving times of war, survival, and dystopian journeys. Many of these stories have young girls, and many of these girls have long hair that is suspiciously styled and clean for their circumstances. Now this is normal for a Hollywood film - nothing we have not seen before. However, what we as a feminist populous can NOT accept is the fact that these girls have their hair down. We are talking about hair PAST the shoulders, long enough to tie into a substantial ponytail hanging LOOSE. Do you expect me to believe that Teresa of Maze Runner fame was content to walk in the DESERT with dark, sweaty long hair - for days on end, no less? Chloe Grace Moretz was happy with her character to have hair whipping about her face as she brandished a gun? Emma from Blue Lagoon: The Awakening only started tying her hair back after at least 14 days stranded on a tropical island, AND she only did that periodically. It is in times like these we look to Katniss Everdeen, beacon of light and responsible updos. The difference a female author makes. So if we get any signatures at all, I personally will reach out to the Academy AND all major film studios to let them know that their endorsement of this tomfoolery is preventing the one thing we feminists crave - realistic representations of what we would do in a dystopian society, which is: KEEP OUR HAIR BACK!
