Stop Kaliwa Dam Project and Save Sierra Madre

Sierra Madre also known as the barrier or backbone of Luzon is the longest mountain range in the Philippines. The Sierra Madre forests are home to hundreds of wildlife species, many of which are unique to the Philippines, including the Philippine eagle and golden crowned flying fox. It is not only rich in species diversity and endemism, but also home, pharmacy and more importantly a sacred ground and cathedral to many indigenous people. The Sierra Madre mountain range forest habitat is threatened by human activities. Human activities like illegal logging, mining, conversion of forest for agriculture, and migration threatened the Sierra Madre mountain range.

After the devastating typhoon that hits our country specifically the area of Luzon, the construction of Kaliwa Dam which was proposed way back 2012 was once again a hot issue. The construction of Kaliwa Dam will definitely do more harm than good. It will destroy half the part of the backbone of Luzon which is the mountain range of Sierra Madre. Kaliwa Dam will place 100,000 lives in danger, it is a debt trap, it will affect the ancestral domains where 5,000 Dumagat-Remontados are situated and a lot more.

We thus call on President Rodrigo Duterte and to all the government officials to revoke the project because it will destroy the biodiversity in Sierra Madre and it will cause a lot of problems in our country for next few years.

We, the Filipino people, say NO TO KALIWA DAM to save SIERRA MADRE.
