On the occasion of Global Hand Washing during the month of October, we, the Kinetic Alliance, a non-profit     student        movement would like  to highlight    the importance of hygiene, particularly hand hygiene at school.

Hand hygiene plays a centre role on safeguarding the    optimum    health of an individual. Since it is universally acknowledged that the hands are the principal route by which cross-infection occurs, hence, hand hygiene is the single   most   important factor in the control of      infection. A study     by     Philippine Association of Medical Technologists (PAMET) proves that proper hand washing is  an essential component of a healthy lifestyle either at home,  workplace or school. This  is why hand washing facilities are   basic school infrastructures which are prerequisite for positive hygiene behaviour and address key determinants of health

San Isidro National High School is a public school situated at Pasumbalas, San Isidro, San Luis, Pampanga with a population of  more    than   1000 students    plus more than 60 teaching and  non-teaching   personnel. There are    only two (2) hand washing areas at school, which is shared by 1,015 students,   teaching    and    non-teaching personnel at school not yet included. The  ratio of 1:508    hand      washing areas to students is deemed unacceptable.  Furthermore, none of  the  facilities  can be classified operational or well-functioning. These present facilities may be    poorly located, have insufficient hand washing materials, be inaccessible, or be  improperly used.

The hand washing areas are situated in the center of campus, which is     fairly and inconvenient for Senior High School students since they are at the back part of the school. In addition, there is no hand washing facility near the school     canteen where students can used before and after eating.

Our group, the Kinetic Alliance, observed and opined that these present barriers are enough reasons for the SINHS community to   believe that the restoration     and addition of hand washing areas at school premises is a timely problem.  These basic school infrastructures are prerequisite for positive hygiene behavior and address key determinants of health. This is an urgent concern, especially in  these  times  where flu and other viruses are at rise.

We, the Kinetic Alliance, call upon the administration and other stakeholders of San Isidro National High School to ensure the following:

-Restore and fix the two (2) existing hand washing facilities and make them full operational and functioning.

-Build at least two (2) more hand washing facilities at the school campus; one situated near the school canteen so the students can access before and after eating and the other one near the Senior High School buildings to be shared by 271 students plus the teaching personnel.

- Equip healthcare facilities at all levels with functional hand washing stations with at least soap, towels for drying and good running water.

- Encourage appropriate hand hygiene behaviour to teachers which will serve as role models to students on how to properly wash hands.

- Display adequate information, education and communication materials on hand washing stations and other prominent places such as school entrance, canteen and clinic.

- Create mass awareness about importance of hand hygiene for good health among the general public by involving Parents and teachers Association (PTA), Barangay Councils, parents and barangay health care provide
