Carter Jernigan started this petition to The Federal Treasury

This topic is important because the government lost 69 million dollars last year from making pennies. We should abolish the penny.

Firstly, pennies are needlessly heavy, now hear me out, for 1 dollar worth of pennies, it is equal to 8.8 oz., or half-a-pound. For coins that are worth one cent, that's too heavy. Second, a penny doesn't have as much worth as it used to. For example, in 1970 (because of inflation) it could pay for as much as 7 cents can today whereas now, it only costs one cent.

However, some people think that we'd be dishonoring Abraham Lincoln by getting rid of the penny, but firstly, he has the five-dollar bill, and second, I think he'd understand if he knew how much money we're losing by making pennies.

Speaking of losing money, let's talk about why our government lost 69 million dollars last year. The reason is that each penny costs 1.82 cents to make, because of that .82 cent loss, it stacked up and that's why the government lost 69 million dollars.

In conclusion, we should absolutely get rid of the obsolete one-cent coin, because inflation is making them less valuable by the day, they're needlessly heavy, and it costs more for the government to make pennies than what they're actual worth is, I hope you agree with me and help get this petition going. Please, if you sign, share with your friends, we can't get this petition recognized if you don't share it.
