Stop the Looming War in Nigeria

In the last couple months, the once peaceful region of Eastern Nigeria has been agitating for secession from the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This move has occurred as this ethnic group complains of marginization, inequity and disregard of Federal character by the present government.

On 10th September 2017, the Federal Government launched operation python dance and sent troops down to Eastern Nigeria. The operation python dance II was allegedly aimed at checking kidnapping, banditry, assassination, secessionist activities within the region, amongst other forms of criminal activities.

But instead of bringing calm, this has caused civic unrest in the state and civilians are being maltreated by the soldiers. There has been gross brutality and very unprofessional conduct from the soldiers who have been sent to protect the people. The military paraded in armored tanks from street to street as a "show of force" technique

The Nigerian union of Journalists (NUJ) had their office invaded by the soldiers, their devices were smashed and they were brutalized and assaulted.

The human rights of the people in places like Aba Abia state has been trampled upon and they are violating their right to live peacefully in their ancestral home. This should not continue as it speaks of a looming disaster because these people will be forced to rise and defend themselves.

The Federal Government of Nigeria needs to withdraw troops and call for dialogue. They need to address these issues and seek to rectify the grievances of the embittered party. This is a democracy and sending military personnels to handle the affairs of the police will make the people of the state enemies of the state.
