Élyse Ladouceur started this petition to The federal government of Canada and federal members of parliament (MP's)

The right to safe, adequate housing is a fundamental human right and a social determinant of health. The United Nations declared the right to such housing as a human right as well as an Indigenous right in their Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (aka UNDRIP), and they declared the housing conditions on reserves as a human rights violation and crime committed by the government of “Canada”.

However, this right along with many others are not being respected, which is causing major health disparities among Indigenous children, Elders and peoples. Although “Canada'' is ranked one of the wealthiest countries in the world, the original peoples of these territories that are living on reserves are not receiving equitable resources or funding as the rest of the canadian population and they’re living in some of the poorest and worst conditions in the country. Poverty and homelessness, overcrowded and moulding homes, and homes in need of repair disproportionately affect Indigenous peoples due to a lack of federal funding, a colonially imposed inequality. More than 40% of the Inuit population and 25% of the First Nations population live in overcrowded housing, which is almost 10 times higher than the non-Indigenous population in “Canada”, of which almost 5% live in overcrowded homes.

The effects of this housing crisis are detrimental, such as numerous social issues and much higher rates of physical and mental health problems. Disproportionate rates of: respiratory and heart conditions including asthma and tuberculosis, cancer, covid-19, suicide, child apprehension, and more are directly linked to this human rights violation. By ignoring these issues for decades, the government of “Canada” is not doing their part in reconciliation and they're continuing genocide against Indigenous peoples. Please join us in calling on the federal government as well as federal members of parliament to put an end to the housing crisis in Indigenous communities, and to respect their fundamental and Indigenous right to housing as well as self-determination by:

1.Providing ample and equitable funding as well as sustainable resources that meet housing standards to provide adequate, safe housing for all Indigenous peoples.

2.Funding and supporting Indigenous led solutions to this crime and crisis' effects on Indigenous children, Elders and peoples such as: the effects on their health, on their families (children have been apprehended due to the lack of governmental funding and action to provide adequate living as well as housing conditions), on their livelihoods and on their lives (the housing crisis has fatal effects on Indigenous communities).

The world, our ancestors and future generations are watching. Make a step towards reconciliation by signing this petition and by continuing to call out the federal government to take part in reconciliation by respecting the fundamental rights of Indigenous peoples.
