Disclaimer before reading: I am a white Australian of British descent who cannot confirm the feelings of those of Aboriginal descent.

The Australian flag for years has been deemed (largely, solely by White Australians) as an accurate representation of the 'true Australia'. Whilst the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags are (by law) respected as much as the current flag, this often disregarded 'respect' is not enough. The Australian flag was created by British people, the Aboriginal flag was created and is currently respected by native Australians.

For Aboriginal people to have to look at the flag which is meant to represent the nation they are apart of, whilst simultaneously depicting the Union Jack, the same symbol that once (and likely still) brought (brings) them so much fear and hatred, is purely offensive. The land that the British conquered years ago once and always will be Aboriginal land - why do we use a British symbol to represent it?

The current flag we use is NOT an accurate representation of Australia, the flag drawing competition required British symbols and was simply imposed on us by the British government - it was not an objective competition that encouraged authentic ideas and creativity. The pure respect for Aboriginal people has been neglected for far too long, and the simple acknowledgement of their land by the introduction of a new (yet old and respected) flag is, whilst not capable of repaying all the trauma and damage caused, far, far overdue.
