Have you ever received a call from a local phone number - perhaps even one that contains several digits similar to your own number - only to find a telemarketer on the other end of line telling you that you've won a free cruise, or some such nonsense?
Telemarketers have begun using a technique known as "spoofing" to disguise the phone number from which they're calling. Often, they will use phone numbers that are similar to the recipients' in order to trick people into answering. Occasionally, they may even call you FROM YOUR OWN number, or call others using YOUR phone number which is not only annoying, but can lead to confusion and anger for both the recipient of the call, and the actual owner of the phone number used to mask the telemarketer's.
This petition seeks to ask the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to put a stop to this problem once and for all by placing new regulations on the telemarketing industry. The FCC enforces the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, which regulates telemarketers. Sign this petition to demand that the FCC amend the regulation to prevent spoofing!
