The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Foreign Postgraduate Scholarship was birthed on the premises of human capacity building for the Niger Delta region, which is the powerhouse of the nation's economy. The current reputation of the scholarship scheme is bad and speaks ill of the NDDC administration. Past scholars (2015 & 2016) have complained bitterly of the inhuman conditions they face abroad while on studies or having to forfeit studies totally owing to non-payment of the scholarship award due to them. The #NewNDDC mantra by the current MD, Mr. Nsima U. Ekere can only be achieved by equipping the young ones with the necessary skills while creating an enabling environment for progress and development to thrive on a global standard.

The NDDC has thus failed in the following areas:

  • Non-payment of the Transport fare. The NDDC conducted the scholarship interview from the 18th - 28th July, 2017, and during the interview candidates filled their details (Name, account number and phone number) to facilitate sending their transport-fare reimbursement. Candidates travelled from all over Nigeria, risking the deplorable state of our roads and danger of the night, just to make it to the interview in Port-Harcourt. Till date (10th September, 2017) the transport fare reimbursement has not been paid.
  • Lack of communication with her prospective awardees. The word ‘communication’ is most effective when it is TWO-WAY in nature. The NDDC is noticeably active on social media (Facebook and Twitter especially and and it is appalling that they have failed to intimate prospective scholars on the reason(s) for not publishing the list of awardees for the 2017 NDDC Foreign Scholarship Scheme. If the Commission is facing challenges of any sort, we the prospective scholars, being active stakeholders, have a right to be communicated to accordingly, to say the least. Until we imbibe the culture of active communication, things won’t improve. Communication is key!
  • Not publishing the List of 2017 scholarship awardees in good time. The NDDC has failed to publish the list of awardees bearing in mind that foreign schools across the globe begin the new session in September each year. Prospective scholars risk losing their admission offers courtesy of the Commission's negligence.

To this effect, we beckon on the Director, Education, Health and Social Services Department of the NDDC, Mr. Frank Eke-Spiff, and other key decision makers to publish the list of successful 2017 scholarship awardees and subsequently pay awardees their tuition and upkeep fees. This will greatly hasten the departure process. September, 2017 is before us and foreign schools across the world begin the new session in a matter of days! Thank you.
