2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the Representation of the People Act 1918, which first gave women in the UK the vote.
To mark this hugely significant event in our political history, and to highlight the work still to be done to achieve full equality, I am calling on the BBC to include “The March of the Women” in the repertoire for this year’s Last Night of the Proms.
A rousing and patriotic song composed by Ethel Smyth, with words by Cicely Hamilton, “The March of the Women” became an anthem for all those who bravely took a stand as part of the women’s suffrage movement, being sung at meetings, rallies, and even by those on hunger strike in prison.
I believe that with enough support, the BBC can be persuaded to include this powerful piece in the ‘Last Night’ celebration.
