Speaker of the House Paul Ryan claims to be a practitioner of the Catholic faith. This petition is requesting that Speaker Ryan's home church of St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Janesville, Wisconcin, his home Diocese of Madison, Wisconsin and Pope Francis excommunicate Mr. Ryan for violating the tenants of Catholicism regarding the poor and the idolatry of money.
Ryan's actions and his "beliefs" have been at odds with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Some notable quotes recording poverty from the Bible include:
Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy
— Proverbs 31:8-9
Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court, for the Lord will take up their case and will exact life for life.
— Proverbs 22:22-23
My whole being will exclaim, "Who is like you, Lord? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them."
— Psalm 35:10
Based on these and many other quotes and the details of the American Health Care Act, it's clear that Ryan and his coworkers do not share this empathy for the poor. The effects of the American Health Care Act will hurt and potentially kill many working class and empovrished Americans. Many of them believers of the same tenants. I'm calling for the local, regional and global leaders of Speaker Ryan's faith organization to excommunicate him from the Catholic Church. Not to punish Speaker Ryan, but for these organizations to show their solidarity, support and empathy for the less fortunate in our society.
