Esteemed Board,

As we continue to grow as a society, practices and attitudes that were once common are exposed as cruel and unacceptable. Such is the case with Albert Cobo's tenure as mayor of Detroit for much of the 1950s.

Per the Detroit News:

"The Republican businessman has been heavily criticized for spearheading urban renewal projects that razed black neighborhoods. He was lambasted throughout his career by civil rights groups that accused him of moving too slowly in response to harassment and police brutality against the city’s black residents and for continuing the city’s longstanding housing segregation policy."

In light of this, it is unacceptable that Detroit's largest convention center continues to bare Cobo's name. Instead, I posit that we honor local boxing hero Joe Louis.

In a time of segregation and fear, Mr Louis also conducted himself with grace, and earned the respect of the white community. He is one of the most successful and winningest fighters of all time. He is the first African American to play in a PGA tournament. And he served our country with honor in WWII.

With the recent demolition of Joe Louis Arena, we must find a new way to pay our respects to Mr Louis. I posit that rechristening Cobo Center as "Joe Louis Convention Center" would fit the bill. Please consider adding this item to the docket of your next meeting.

Best Regards,
