My 16 year old son has been diagnosed with Addisons Disease. This is an autoimmune disease that means his adrenal glands no longer function as they should.
Therefore he is dependent on steroids to survive and relies on an emergency injection when he becomes unwell .
If the injection is needed it's likely that my son will be unconscious or so sick that he cannot administer the injection himself. It's in the form of an intramuscular injection kit that needs to be put together and drawn up.
Unfortunately at this time his school are not trained to carry out this injection. If it was in an epipen form or a simple auto injection kit then the staff would have the training to administer this and potentially save his life.
The nhs do not currently offer this injection in an easy form like an epipen.
There are 8,400 people in the UK with this disease.  Many of whom the disease can be fatal.
With the auto injection I believe lives could be saved and patients , relatives and carers could carry on with their lives with the comfort of knowing they have this straight forward injection that could save their lives.
