To Whom It May Concern:

RE: Temporary Closure of Fort Street Public School and Relocation of Students

Thank you for your time to read this letter in regards to the proposed plan to move Fort Street Public School Students to the temporary pop up school located at Wentworth Park, Ultimo.

We, the parents of the student body are concerned and fundamentally against the move of our students to a location that is currently out of catchment. This move, if allowed to proceed will, fundamentally cause disruption to the daily lives of our children and our families, with impossible logistics such as:

Forcing families to take public transport taking a minimum of 40 minutes each way;
Parents forced to drive their children to school up to 30 minutes away from their homes, each way;
Force students to commute via private buses for an extra 30 minutes each way, adding an extra hour to their school
As parents, part of our choices in where we live include location and reputation of the schools in our proximity. As parents of the inner city community, we only have one option of public school to send our children to – Fort Street Public School. To remove the option of a school in our catchment area until 2023 when the renovations are complete will be fundamentally challenging to the majority of parents within the school.

This move has been approved by the school principal without consultation with the parent body, with limited knowledge and information given to parents. I would draw your attention to protocols developed by NSW Government regarding protocols for school closures, recess or amalgamation, which states that that in step five, the School Consultative Group facilitates meetings and other communications with school staff, parents and the wider community to consider the implications of the closure. We the parent body maintain that this has not occurred and our constant questions to the school have been met with insistence that the school had not made a decision or had no more information for us at the end of 2019. Without consultation to the wider student body, the Principal and the P&C has now signed off on the move to the temporary pop up school.

We the parent body now face difficult decisions as to how to plan our lives for the disruption that this school move will have, with limited support and information from the school to date.

We ask you, Education Representative, to consider delaying the school decant to find a more suitable alternative for our children that allows them to remain in catchment and close to the community they come from. We also ask that this alternative is found in consultation with the wider school community, as we feel the process to date, which has been done behind closed doors by a select few without regard for the broader school population has been mismanaged.

Kind Regards,

The Parents Undersigned.
