Racial Disparity Across Incomes

Racial Disparity Across Incomes
Why this petition matters
In recent years, high rates of maternal mortality in the U.S have alarmed researchers, one statistic has been especially concerning. Black mothers in the U.S die at three to four times the rate of white mothers, one of the widest of all racial disparities in women's health. A black women is 22 percent more likely to die from heart disease than a white women, 71 percent more likely to perish from cervical cancer, but 243 percent more likely to die from pregnancy or childbirth-related causes. Five medical complications that are common causes of maternal death and injury, black women were two to three times more likely to die than white woman who had the same condition. Plenty of black women are victims of social inequities, they don't have access to healthy food, safe drinking water, a safe neighborhood, a decent job or reliable transportation as white women do. Not only are these mothers differ same social qualities as white women but also aren't taken serious as white women are. Here are a few stories: There was a new mother of Nebraska with a history of hypertension who couldn't get her doctors to believe she was having a heart attack until she had another one. A young Florida mother-to-be whose breathing problems were blamed on obesity when in fact her lungs were filling with fluid and her heart was failing. The Arizona mother whose anesthesiologist assumed she smoked marijuana because of the way she did her hair. These are all black mothers who weren't taken seriously. The Department of Health Care and Social Services need to help fund mothers that can't afford transportation, food and water, and safe place for these women to sleep. They also need to take action into investigations against doctors and nurses staff of the reasons why black women are dying under they're care. They should use a strong consequence such as losing their license for irresponsible doctors and staff.
