The social care system is underfunded, a recent report also suggests that children’s services unfairly target those families that are on a lower income or facing crisis. Families with parents with mental health issues or children with SEN needs- especially those who are of a financially disadvantaged background are being targeted. This in itself is a massive issue that needs dealing with. However a more prevalent and problematic issue needs attention. Resident parents of children with SEN needs - who are statistically more likely to both have mental health issues and have faced family break down are being unfairly discriminated against. Whilst the non resident parent will be asked to do certain things or make certain changes - and it isn’t followed up if they do not. The resident parent can be forced to undergo or oblige to a massive amount of ‘jumping through hoops’ whilst being treated like an awful parent because of the failings of the other parent. The non resident parent is rarely called to account or actions they are asked to complete followed up with. For instance - although I am not the problem with my daughters - them being put on a plan was never about me- I’ve had to be assessed via a graded care profile - however their father who is undoubtedly the actual issue has had to do no such thing? I also have mental health issues albeit I have been stable for two years- this is still used against me. Any mention of mental health issues on their fathers part or indeed drinking issues (I have a video of him rolling around on the floor drunk and slurring unable to distinguish which of his twins are which) are dismissed because he isn’t the resident parent. Yet I am still told by CS that I just keep up contact (also despite my children not wanting to) because of my mental health issues.  I think both parents should be held accountable in the same way, especially if contact is being forced.
