Support SportCheer England
(Taken from SCE statement from 4th September 2020)
On 9th July 2020 the U.K. government requested that the National Governing Body of each sport put together and submit a document detailing plans for a return to their sport.
SportCheer England put in extensive work to produce said document and submitted this to the DCMS on 19th July 2020. This was published on the SCE website and a copy was also sent to the International Cheer Union (World Governing Body of Cheerleading and IOC recognised) who praised the work.
SCE received confirmation from the DCMS that the document had been received and were advised to wait for further communication following its review. SCE then received communication from Sport England, (who are working with the DCMS to verify organisations) asking clarification on SCE's relationship with an EP( Event Provider) who has previously laid claim to the title of governing body.
Unfortunately despite being the only document submitted to the government for the sport of Cheerleading, the RTP document approval is now delayed due to this Event Provider claiming to be ‘A National Organisation for the Sport of Cheerleading’. This has naturally led to some confusion on behalf of the DCMS and Sport England, and SCE received a request this week from Sport England to speak with the EP in question to see if it was possible to produce a joint return to sport document or to garner their support for our current document. However it is unfortunately clear that there are irreconcilable differences in the approaches to the fundamentals of cheerleading and so it seems that this is not possible at this time.
Cheerleading is an amazing sport, creating so many opportunities and experiences for young people from all walks of life. Cheerleading teaches hard work, determination, team work and many more important life skills as well as being one of the best forms of exercise available to young people across the country.
We desperately need the support of the UK government and Sport England in order to allow the safe return of our sport so that our amazing young athletes can continue to do the thing they love, and also so that the thousands of businesses in the UK can continue to operate providing a service for their customers, in a safe manner in line with Return to Play guidance.
As Cheerleading program owners, coaches and athletes, we fully support the hard work that SCE has carried out in in putting together the Return to Play document for the many Cheerleading teams and programs from across the country. We recognise that Sport Cheer England represent the interests of the sport of Cheerleading in England and their role as National Governing Body for the sport.
SportCheer England has worked tirelessly to provide the best possible guidance and direction for our sport, and has the best interests of our industry at heart.
We urge DCMS and Sport England to recognise the role of SportCheer England as the NGB for Cheerleading and to consider SportCheer England's submission of their RTP document at the earliest opportunity.
