I’m signing because the Delaware Contemporary has failed to make actual steps toward inclusion of Black board members, staff, and leadership - even when being directly confronted. When I declined a board role and asked them to consider a Black candidate who had the same professional and artistic experience (and was better qualified in other areas), they instead asked us both to take on less prominent (but more labor intensive) volunteer roles.

Prior to this, when I complained about sexual harassment by a security volunteer, they did not fully investigate the complaint - just gave him the night off while I was attending an event. He continued to have a role there afterwards.

Art is for everyone, and bias against great artists because they arent white or straight is outrageous.

As an artist who has exhibited at the DCCA before, I'm so disappointed to hear of DCCA's poor efforts to engage black and minority artists and audiences.

Facilitating selective memory for an Art Institution‘s (such as DCCA) historical behavior is a bad idea. All the work presented by DCCA has relevance, in terms of setting balance and tone of the organization in regards to future behavior. If historical foundation is surgically removed, then the integrity and relevance of the DCCA is negatively impacted. However, this situation is recoverable by simply communicating to the affected artists, associated staff and curators to regenerate and hopefully elaborate on the excised work.

I am signing this because: 1. I believe an institution like the Delaware Contemporary can and should address its past and work toward a stronger, diverse future where all feel welcome to work, visit, and display and 2. I am saddened to hear that the record before 2017 has been deleted. As an artist who showed in 2016, I look to the institution’s website to corroborate my CV. I know there is a lot of changeover in leadership at the Contemporary, but you need to get it together and right the ship!
