The Declaration of Lifetime Independence
Sign the Declaration of Lifetime Independence - because freedom shouldn't end when we need it most.
Every American should be able to exercise the freedom of end-of-life choice. On July 12, 2010, we will deliver the signed declaration to Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. We will also publish the signed declaration on our web site at www.compassionandchoices.org.
- Secretary, Health and Human Services
As a member of the Compassion & Choices community, I stand for unfettered liberty at the end of life. Terminally ill patients of sound mind and failing body have an inherent right to self-determination and the protection of that right by the laws of our land.
Consequently, we the undersigned hold these truths to be self-evident:
all men and women are created equal,
we are endowed with certain unalienable Rights,
including Life, Liberty, the Pursuit of Happiness, and the freedom to achieve death with dignity when we are in the grips of a terminal illness.
Together, we shall advance our cause in courtrooms, legislatures, hospitals, the public arena, and beyond, until the great promise of American liberty embraces our lives as well as our deaths.
