The proposed confidence and supply agreement between the Conservative and Democratic Unionist Parties is not in the National Interest. The UK Government is one of the two arbiters of the power sharing assembly in Northern Ireland. The power sharing agreement is currently suspended while the two arbiters, the governments of the UK and the Republic of Ireland mediate between the political parties concerned. One of those parties is the DUP.
In those circumstances any agreement between the UK Government and the DUP, even if a confidence and suppply one, will affect the ability of the UK Government to be impartial. This will affect the current talks, may prevent an agreement and may be a factor in the return of political discord, and possibly violence in Northern Ireland. It should not take place.
