Petition Closed

Since the United States was founded we have fought injustices in our country and around the world. Whether it was the passing of the 13th and 14th Amendments and the Civil Rights Act, America has tried to right is wrongs. Today however same-sex couples are not given the same rights as heterosexual couples. The Respect for Marriage Act when passed will give same-sex couples the same benefits as heterosexual couples and repeal the Defense of Marriage Act of 1996 which defined marriage as one man and one woman. The Defense of Marriage Act or DOMA is unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection Clause which says no law should exclude other citizens from the same jurisdiction of the law.
